Chapters: Perico Pastor

From June 5th to September 28th 2014

I was born near here, in La Seu. My father was a notary, and I often heard him speak of marriage settlements (capítulos) and their importance in an agricultural society: if they were well done, they helped to ensure happiness for one or two generations; if not, they could mean misery for some. I don’t see my pictures, either when doing them or when looking at them, as complete works which teach the viewer something, but as communicators which must be able to converse with their owners for a long time: by looking at their pictures, they discover things, even years later. If one day the picture goes quiet, says nothing, it is time to get rid of it. But good pictures, like good books, which gain from each rereading, always have something interesting to say to those who give them a little time and attention. A good picture is always a good conversationalist, attentive to the viewer’s mood: not trying to call attention, but always with something to say when asked. It is in this sense, that of an agreement over time, that I remember my father’s capítulos.
