Alexander Calder: the form and the dream

From June 12th to October 12th 2008

The exhibition shows an original series of 14 large format wall hangings and 5 hammocks designed by the painter and sculptor Alexander Calder, made in 1975, as result of one humanitarian project: after the earthquake in Nicaragua in 1972, Calder was one of the artists who donated a work for the collection of funds to rebuild the city of Managua. As gratitude he was given a Masaya hammock which fascinated him and he decided to make a series of designs for the craftsmen of Masaya and Guatemala to weave into hammocks and wall hangings for reproduction in limited editions of 100 of each design with the intention to provide the craftsmen with incomes of four times the normal.
